John Sherman (born 1959), nicknamed Verm (short for "Vermin") is an American climber and a pioneering boulderer. He is also a writer and photographer. He is the originator of the V-scale for grading boulder problems.
Sherman's reputation does not exist without qualification. Alleged clashes between his traditionalist stances during the bolt wars of the late 80s/early 90s and his perceived 'summit at any cost' bouldering ethics (which include a disastrous torched-hold incident) have been the subject of grumblings in some communities.
"As climbers returned to the area, renewed interest in bouldering was sparked by the traveling traditionalist, John Sherman. While at the Blackjack Boulders, he put up Satan on a Halfshell (V8) during a period of wet weather. Sherman, who has decried sport climbing ethics in his many articles in Climbing magazine, apparently does not have any problem with the use of a blowtorch to dry handholds. Unfortunately, Dean Potter found out the hard way what happens to rock that is heated and cooled repeatedly. After snagging the tempting finishing jug for the apparent second ascent, Potter found himself sprawled on the ground, still firmly clutching the hold."
